	Putting yourself through college appears to be getting harder and harder for young Americans and a new report finds that to make ends meet, many are becoming riddled with credit card debt.

According to Sallie Mae, the leading student loan provider in the U.S., college students used credit cards more than ever in 2008. The report found that three out of 10 students put tuition payments on their credit card while 92 percent put other school related expenses like books and supplies on their cards. The average balance for college students was $3,173, according to the study, with college seniors seeing an average balance of $4,100 - up from $2,900 in 2004. Marie O'Malley, director of consumer research for Sallie Mae, said college students are putting themselves into massive credit card debit instead of using more cost-effective measures. "Students and families need to build a comprehensive budget ahead of time to cover not only tuition, but also other necessities like supplies and travel costs that contribute to the overall cost of college," she said. One way parents can make sure their college-aged children stay out of debt and maintain a budget is through a prepaid credit card or prepaid debit card. The cards often require no credit check and only allow the user to spend the amount already loaded on the card.
